Shock therapy for stroke hands? new trial tests brain zaps

NCT ID NCT05866003

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

After a stroke, many people lose the ability to open their affected hand. This study tests three different non-invasive brain stimulation methods combined with hand therapy to see which works best. Researchers will enroll 63 adults who had a stroke 6 to 24 months ago and compare how many blocks they can move in one minute before and after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a more effective rehabilitation approach to help stroke survivors regain hand function.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (63 participants) comparing different stimulation protocols. Results may not apply to all stroke survivors, and the improvements may be modest.
