First seen Apr 15, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study compares standard fortification of donor breast milk to a targeted approach that adjusts nutrients based on each baby's needs. Researchers will enroll 50 preterm infants born at or before 30 weeks and weighing under 1500 grams. The goal is to see if personalized fortification improves weight gain, length, and head growth compared to the usual method.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Similac Human Milk Fortifier and Similac Liquid Protein Fortifier (dietary supplements added to breast milk)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to better growth and shorter hospital stays for preterm infants who rely on donor milk.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 50 infants, so results may not apply to all preterm babies. The intervention may not significantly improve growth or could cause feeding intolerance.
