New ultrasound score could revolutionize monitoring of rare artery disease

NCT ID NCT07571577

First seen May 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study will enroll 100 people with active Takayasu arteritis, a rare disease that causes inflammation of the large arteries. Researchers will use a special ultrasound score (OTUS) to see if it can track disease activity over time. The goal is to find a better way to monitor the disease and predict outcomes, without relying solely on blood tests or symptoms.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a reliable, non-invasive tool to monitor disease activity and guide treatment decisions for Takayasu arteritis patients.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly improve outcomes. The ultrasound score may not prove sensitive enough to replace current monitoring methods.
