Can a phone call after a mental health ER visit prevent a return trip?
NCT ID NCT07411300
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests two simple ways to support parents after their child (ages 10-17) visits the ER for suicidal thoughts or behaviors and is sent home with a safety plan. One group gets follow-up phone calls from a social worker, another gets automatic messages through MyChart, and a third gets usual care. The goal is to see if these check-ins help families connect to ongoing mental health services and reduce repeat ER visits.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Telephone calls and automatic MyChart messages
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simple follow-up support helps caregivers connect to mental health services and reduces repeat ER visits.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (75 participants) testing feasibility and acceptability, not a proven treatment. Results may not apply to other hospitals or populations.
