New study tests therapy to save homeless youth from suicide
NCT ID NCT05994612
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
Suicide is the leading cause of death among youth experiencing homelessness, and most don't get help. This study will test whether 10 sessions of Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CTSP), delivered by outreach workers, can reduce suicidal thoughts, substance use, and depression in 300 homeless youth aged 15-24. Participants will be followed for 12 months to see if CTSP plus usual services works better than usual services alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CTSP) – a 10-session behavioral therapy plus optional booster sessions
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide an effective, community-delivered therapy to reduce suicidal thoughts and substance use in homeless youth.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (300 participants) and the therapy may not outperform usual services. Results may not apply to all homeless youth.
