Two-Minute sweat test could spot hidden nerve damage
NCT ID NCT04927832
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a device called SUDOSCAN, which measures sweat function in just two minutes, to see if it can detect small fiber nerve damage in people with autoimmune diseases (like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) or unexplained pain. Researchers enrolled 139 adults and compared SUDOSCAN results with standard nerve tests. The goal was to find out how common this nerve damage is and whether SUDOSCAN can help diagnose it non-invasively.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SUDOSCAN device (non-invasive sweat test) and electromyogram (EMG)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a fast, painless way to diagnose small fiber nerve damage earlier in people with autoimmune diseases or chronic pain.
What could go wrong
This is a completed observational study, not a treatment trial. The SUDOSCAN method may not be accurate enough to replace standard nerve tests, and results may not apply to all patients.
