Suction toothbrush may slash pneumonia risk for ventilator patients

NCT ID NCT07125495

First seen Apr 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tested whether using a suction toothbrush—a tool that cleans teeth and removes saliva at the same time—can help prevent lung infections in intensive care patients who are on breathing machines. Researchers compared this method to standard oral care in 111 adults. The goal was to see if the suction toothbrush lowers the chance of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia, a common and serious complication.
