Can targeted leg exercises help stroke survivors walk better?

NCT ID NCT07659522

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This trial investigates whether adding strength training for the tibialis anterior muscle (which lifts the foot) to proprioceptive (balance) exercises improves recovery in people who had a stroke at least six months ago. Participants will be assigned to six weeks of either balance exercises alone or balance exercises plus strength training. Researchers will measure changes in muscle strength, balance, walking, and daily function.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Proprioceptive training with or without tibialis anterior strength training

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a more effective rehabilitation program for chronic stroke survivors to improve balance, walking, and independence.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with 76 participants, so results may not apply to all stroke survivors. The exercises require physical ability and may not benefit those with severe impairments.
