Can a 'Stress Boost' pill fight debilitating fatigue?
NCT ID NCT05435781
Summary
This study is testing whether giving patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) or giant cell arteritis (GCA) an extra dose of the hormone hydrocortisone during stressful times can improve their quality of life, especially by reducing severe fatigue. The trial includes 250 adults over 50 who are already on a low, tapering dose of prednisolone and have a related hormone deficiency. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the extra hydrocortisone or a placebo during periods of stress for up to six months, while researchers track their fatigue and other symptoms daily via a smartphone app.
