New stitch may cut C-Section pain and opioid use

NCT ID NCT07574086

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two types of stitches used to close the belly muscle after a C-section: a new barbed suture (Stratafix) versus the standard smooth suture (PDS). The goal is to see if the barbed stitch leads to less pain and less need for narcotic painkillers in the first two days after surgery. About 200 women having their first C-section will take part, and their pain will be tracked for two weeks after birth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Stratafix barbed suture (device)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple way to reduce pain and opioid use after C-section, improving recovery for new mothers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (200 people) comparing two surgical materials. The difference may be small or not meaningful, and results may not apply to all C-sections.
