Quick swab test slashes unnecessary antibiotic use in ICU pneumonia care

NCT ID NCT06272994

First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tested whether telling doctors the results of a rapid nasal swab test could help them stop using a strong antibiotic (vancomycin) sooner in adults with pneumonia in the intensive care unit. The trial involved 277 participants and compared the usual approach to one where doctors got a page alert if the swab was negative. The goal was to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and its side effects while keeping patients safe.
