Heart hole closure may cut stroke risk in seniors – landmark trial underway

NCT ID NCT05907694

First seen Apr 01, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tests whether closing a common heart defect called PFO (a small hole between the heart's upper chambers) can prevent repeat strokes in people over 60 who have already had a stroke of unknown cause. About 714 older adults will receive either medication alone or medication plus a minimally invasive procedure to close the hole. The goal is to see if the closure reduces the chance of having another stroke.
