Heart surgery for babies: can a common drug prevent dangerous inflammation?
NCT ID NCT03229538
Summary
This study tested whether giving the steroid methylprednisolone to newborns before and during heart surgery helps control dangerous inflammation and improves recovery. Over 1,200 infants having surgery with a heart-lung machine were randomly given either the steroid or a placebo. Researchers tracked whether the steroid reduced serious complications, length of hospital stay, or death compared to the dummy treatment.
