Common steroid could be key to avoiding surgery for millions with painful bowel blockages
NCT ID NCT07084441
Summary
This study is testing if adding a short course of the steroid dexamethasone to standard supportive care helps resolve painful bowel blockages caused by scar tissue from past surgeries. It will enroll 550 adults to see if the steroid treatment increases the chance the blockage clears on its own, avoiding emergency surgery. The goal is to find a safe, widely available treatment that could improve recovery and reduce hospital stays for this common condition.
