Brain stent vs shunt: which saves sight better?

NCT ID NCT05050864

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study compares two invasive treatments for idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) when standard medication fails. IIH causes high pressure in the skull, leading to vision loss. The trial will test if a venous sinus stent (a tube placed in a brain vein) or a neurosurgical shunt (a tube that drains fluid from the brain) is better at reducing swelling in the back of the eye and preserving sight. About 276 adults with moderate to severe vision problems will take part.
