Could stem cells ease your aching back?

NCT ID NCT06001853

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 study tests whether bone marrow stem cells can safely reduce pain in people with low back pain from worn-out facet joints. Forty participants will receive injections into the painful joints and be monitored for side effects and pain levels. The goal is to see if this approach works before moving to larger studies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new, non-surgical option for chronic low back pain caused by facet joint arthritis.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 40 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Stem cell treatments for back pain are still experimental and may not provide lasting relief.
