Cord blood stem cells injected into stroke patients: a first step

NCT ID NCT04434768

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase trial tests whether stem cells from donated umbilical cords are safe for people who recently had a stroke. Ten participants receive the cells through a vein or directly into the brain's arteries. Researchers monitor for side effects and look for any signs of improvement in brain function over 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UMSC01)

What this could lead to

If this early trial shows safety and hints of benefit, it could point toward a new way to help stroke patients recover brain function.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, first-in-human study with only 10 participants. The dual injection method has never been tested in people, so unknown risks exist. Success is far from guaranteed.
