Stem cell breakthrough tested for deadly transplant complication
NCT ID NCT03847844
Summary
This study tested whether adding umbilical cord stem cells to standard steroid treatment helps patients with acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a serious complication that can occur after a bone marrow transplant. The trial involved 26 patients who developed moderate to severe GVHD after transplant. Researchers gave patients either stem cells plus steroids or a placebo plus steroids to see if the stem cells improved response rates and survival.
