Could a simple vitamin boost plaque stability and cut stroke risk?

NCT ID NCT07680595

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This study investigates whether adding folic acid to standard statin therapy can make carotid artery plaques more stable, potentially reducing stroke risk. Researchers will enroll 180 adults aged 18 to 75 with carotid plaque buildup, giving half of them atorvastatin alone and the other half atorvastatin plus folic acid for six months. The main goal is to see if the combination reduces plaque thickness more than statins alone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

atorvastatin and folic acid

What this could lead to

If adding folic acid to statins improves plaque stability, it could lead to a simple, low-cost way to lower stroke risk in people with carotid artery disease.

What could go wrong

This is an early exploratory study with only 180 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The 6-month treatment period is short, and the benefits of folic acid on plaque stability are not yet proven.
