Statin-Free in palliative care: could stopping cholesterol drugs improve quality of life?
NCT ID NCT07543432
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether it is safe and beneficial for people with advanced cancer to stop taking statins, which are cholesterol-lowering drugs often used for prevention. Researchers will follow 80 patients in palliative care for 12 weeks, monitoring cholesterol levels, muscle strength, fatigue, and quality of life. The goal is to gather knowledge that could lead to better guidelines on when to stop preventive medications near the end of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Deprescribing statins (stopping statin medication)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide clear guidelines on when to safely stop statins in advanced cancer patients, reducing side effects and unnecessary medication.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply broadly. There is a risk of cardiovascular events after stopping statins, which the study monitors closely.
