New antibiotic strategy shows promise against MRSA in cystic fibrosis

NCT ID NCT03489629

First seen Feb 20, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tested whether giving two rounds of antibiotics (TMP/SMX or minocycline) early and repeatedly could clear MRSA infections in people with cystic fibrosis. The study enrolled 37 participants aged 2 to 45. The main goal was to see if this approach led to negative MRSA cultures after treatment, compared to a historical control group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) or Minocycline

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help clear MRSA infections early in people with cystic fibrosis, potentially reducing lung damage and hospitalizations.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 37 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Antibiotic resistance and side effects are possible risks.
