Can a simple patch make stomach surgery safer?
NCT ID NCT06464978
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using a reinforcement patch on surgical staplers can lower the risk of leaks and other complications after stomach cancer surgery. About 382 patients will be randomly assigned to receive either the reinforced stapler or a standard stapler during their operation. The main goal is to see if the patch reduces the rate of anastomotic leakage within 30 days after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
stapler reinforcement patch (a device used during surgery)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce serious complications like leaks after stomach surgery, making recovery safer for gastric cancer patients.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-sized trial testing a device, not a new drug. The patch may not lower complication rates significantly, and results may not apply to all hospitals or patients.
