Can a damaged spleen still fight infection? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT02232191

Summary

This study aims to understand how well people with spleen injuries can build protection against pneumonia after receiving a vaccine. Researchers will compare the immune response in 75 adult trauma patients who receive different treatments for their spleen injury: observation only, a procedure to block blood flow to the injured area, or surgical removal of the spleen. The main goal is to measure antibody levels in the blood before and after vaccination to see which treatment best preserves the body's ability to fight future infections.
