Nerve block could widen key artery during bypass surgery

NCT ID NCT07663435

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a numbing injection called a superficial parasternal intercostal plane block (SPIPB) can widen the internal thoracic artery, making it easier for surgeons to harvest during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The trial involves 50 adults aged 22 to 65 undergoing CABG. Researchers will measure changes in artery diameter and cross-sectional area after the block, as well as how long and how difficult the harvesting is.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If effective, this nerve block could make coronary bypass surgery faster and less technically challenging for surgeons.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The block may not meaningfully improve outcomes or could cause side effects.
