Can AI help pick the right back surgery? major study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT03570801

Summary

This study aims to find the best surgical treatment for a common back problem involving spinal narrowing and a slight slippage of the vertebrae. It will compare two procedures—a simpler decompression surgery versus a more complex decompression with fusion—in over 600 patients. A key part of the study is testing whether getting a pre-surgery review from a panel of expert surgeons, or using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze spine images, leads to better patient outcomes and satisfaction.
