Nose numbing tested to ease agony of opioid withdrawal

NCT ID NCT04946656

Summary

This small pilot study tested if numbing a specific nerve bundle in the nose (called an SPG block) could reduce the symptoms of opioid withdrawal. The goal was to see if this could help people get through withdrawal, which is a major barrier to starting proven addiction medications. The study involved a small group of non-treatment-seeking adults with opioid addiction who were admitted to a research unit for the procedure.
