New scan may spare half the neck from radiation in throat cancer

Summary
This study tests whether using a SPECT-CT scan to map lymph nodes can allow doctors to safely give radiation only to the side of the neck where the cancer is, instead of both sides. About 510 people with oropharyngeal cancer that has not spread to the middle of the throat will be randomly assigned to standard two-sided radiation or scan-guided one-sided radiation. The goal is to see if cancer control is the same while reducing side effects like swallowing problems and dry mouth.
