Sound sleep hack may double power of PTSD nightmare therapy

NCT ID NCT05933109

First seen Mar 10, 2026 · Last updated May 06, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tested if playing a specific sound during REM sleep could make nightmare therapy work better for people with PTSD. 46 adults with PTSD and chronic nightmares did 3 weekly therapy sessions to imagine a positive ending to their nightmare. Half of them heard a sound during REM sleep that was linked to that positive image, while the other half heard a different sound. The goal was to see if the sound group had fewer PTSD symptoms and nightmares up to 3 months later.
