Brain scans used to match smokers with best Quit-Aid

NCT ID NCT02162849

Summary

This study aims to find out if the quit-smoking drug varenicline (Chantix) or nicotine patches work better when paired with counseling, depending on a person's personality and how their brain responds to rewards. Researchers enrolled 204 adult smokers and randomly assigned them to receive one of the two medications (plus a placebo for the other) along with behavioral counseling. They measured brain activity with EEG tests to see if it predicts which treatment works best for each individual.
