First seen Mar 12, 2026 · Last updated May 04, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study asked over 1,200 US adults who smoke cigarettes to view ads for smokeless tobacco products like snus. Some ads included FDA-approved claims that these products carry lower risks of lung cancer and other diseases compared to cigarettes. Researchers measured how the ads changed people's beliefs about harm and their interest in trying or switching to smokeless tobacco. The goal was to understand if these authorized claims influence smokers' perceptions and intentions.
