Smart insulin pump aims to reduce dangerous lows in type 1 diabetes
NCT ID NCT03047486
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study followed 30 adults with type 1 diabetes who used the Smartguard system, a partially automated insulin pump that can pause insulin delivery when it predicts a low blood sugar. The goal was to see how well the system works in everyday life, focusing on time spent in the target blood sugar range and reducing hypoglycemia. Participants used the system for one year, and researchers collected data from the pump and continuous glucose monitor.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Smartguard system (insulin pump with continuous glucose monitor and hypoglycemia minimizer algorithm)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that the Smartguard system helps people with type 1 diabetes maintain safer blood sugar levels with fewer dangerous lows in everyday life.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study with only 30 participants and no control group, so results may not apply to everyone. The system is not a cure and still requires active management.
