AI cameras vs. panic buttons: which saves seniors faster after a fall?
NCT ID NCT05875038
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares an intelligent video surveillance system that uses AI to detect falls automatically against a standard telealarm that requires the person to press a button. Researchers will enroll 395 adults aged 75 and older who are at risk of falling and recently hospitalized. The goal is to see if the video system reduces unplanned hospital readmissions within 90 days by detecting falls sooner and avoiding long periods on the floor.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
intelligent video surveillance system (VA2CS) with AI-based fall detection
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a more reliable way to detect falls in seniors living alone, reducing time spent on the floor and preventing complications like hospitalization.
What could go wrong
This is an early comparative study with 395 participants, and the video system's performance data comes from the manufacturer. It may not work better than a telealarm in real-world conditions, and privacy concerns or technical issues could limit its use.
