New hope for kidney disease? experimental drug SLN12140 enters phase 2 trial

NCT ID NCT07553494

First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This Phase 2 trial tests an experimental drug called SLN12140 in 48 adults with IgA nephropathy, a kidney disease that is not well controlled by standard treatments. Participants receive different doses of SLN12140 or a placebo by injection for 36 weeks, followed by an open-label period where everyone can get the drug. The main goal is to see if SLN12140 reduces protein in the urine, a sign of kidney damage.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

SLN12140 (an experimental drug given by injection)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a new treatment option for people with IgA nephropathy whose disease is not well controlled by current standard therapies.

What could go wrong

This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 48 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may not work better than placebo, and side effects are still being studied.
