Breast cancer breakthrough? trial tests skipping surgery for some women

NCT ID NCT07357948

First seen Jan 24, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether women with triple-negative breast cancer who have a complete response to chemo-immunotherapy can safely skip breast and lymph node surgery. 150 participants will be randomly assigned to either standard treatment with surgery or standard treatment without surgery. The goal is to see if avoiding surgery leads to similar cancer control with fewer complications and better quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

omission of surgery

What this could lead to

If successful, this could allow some women with triple-negative breast cancer to avoid breast and lymph node surgery after a complete response to chemo-immunotherapy, reducing side effects and improving quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial with only 150 participants, so results are preliminary. Skipping surgery might increase the risk of cancer returning in the breast or lymph nodes, and long-term safety is not yet known.
