Sing your way to better hearing? new study tests choir power for seniors
NCT ID NCT06580847
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether joining a choir for 12 weeks can help older adults (60+) with mild-to-moderate untreated hearing loss understand speech better and improve their mood and social connections. 210 participants will be randomly assigned to either a weekly group singing class or an audiobook discussion group. Researchers will measure speech perception, emotional well-being, and heart rate before and after the program.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- group singing
- What this could lead to
- If it works, group singing could become a simple, enjoyable way to improve speech understanding and social well-being for older adults with hearing loss.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial with no blinding, and the control group (audiobook club) may also provide benefits, making it hard to prove singing is better. Results may not apply to everyone.
