Sing your way to better hearing? new study tests choir power for seniors

NCT ID NCT06580847

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether joining a choir for 12 weeks can help older adults (60+) with mild-to-moderate untreated hearing loss understand speech better and improve their mood and social connections. 210 participants will be randomly assigned to either a weekly group singing class or an audiobook discussion group. Researchers will measure speech perception, emotional well-being, and heart rate before and after the program.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

group singing

What this could lead to

If it works, group singing could become a simple, enjoyable way to improve speech understanding and social well-being for older adults with hearing loss.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no blinding, and the control group (audiobook club) may also provide benefits, making it hard to prove singing is better. Results may not apply to everyone.
