New artificial disc could replace fusion for neck pain sufferers
NCT ID NCT03123549
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new artificial disc called the Simplify Disc for people with two-level cervical disc disease causing arm pain, neck pain, or nerve problems. The trial involved 182 participants and compared the disc to standard fusion surgery. The goal was to see if the disc is at least as safe and effective at reducing disability and improving neurological function over 24 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Simplify Cervical Artificial Disc (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this artificial disc could offer a motion-preserving alternative to fusion surgery for people with two-level cervical disc disease, potentially reducing pain and disability while maintaining neck movement.
What could go wrong
This is a completed study comparing a device to standard surgery, but results may not apply to all patients. There are risks of implant failure, additional surgery, or serious adverse events.
