No-Drill cavity treatment for kids tested in new study
NCT ID NCT06786975
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will test whether a liquid called silver diamine fluoride works as well as gentle fillings (atraumatic restorative treatment) for stopping cavities in children aged 2 to 5. About 156 kids from kindergartens will get one of the two treatments, and researchers will check how well the cavities stop growing, how parents and kids feel about the treatment, and whether it improves quality of life. The goal is to find a simpler, more acceptable way to manage early childhood cavities in community settings.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Silver diamine fluoride (a liquid applied to cavities to stop decay)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simpler, less scary way to treat cavities in young children without drilling or fillings.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial (156 children) comparing two existing treatments, so it won't produce a new cure. The silver diamine fluoride may stain teeth black, which some parents or children may not like.
