Silver patch may shield fragile newborns from deadly infections
NCT ID NCT00964093
First seen Mar 26, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study tested whether a silver alginate dressing (Algidex) placed over central line insertion sites can prevent bloodstream infections in very low birth weight infants (500-1500 grams). Researchers compared infection rates, hospital stay length, and safety in 100 babies receiving either the silver dressing or standard care. The goal was to find a simple way to protect these vulnerable newborns from serious infections.
