New Pre-Treatment aims to cure sickle cell with fewer complications

NCT ID NCT05249452

Summary

This study tested whether giving two drugs (azathioprine and hydroxyurea) for three months before a stem cell transplant could help the transplant work better in adults with sickle cell disease. The goal was to help patients' bodies accept the donor cells more completely, potentially curing the disease and allowing them to stop taking anti-rejection medication sooner. The study involved 20 patients who received stem cells from a matched sibling donor.
