Blood swap trial aims to save lives in High-Risk sickle cell patients

NCT ID NCT04084080

Summary

This study tests whether monthly automated blood exchange transfusions can reduce hospital visits and prevent deaths in adults with sickle cell disease who are at high risk of heart and lung complications. Researchers will compare the transfusion approach against standard care in 173 participants over 12 months. The goal is to see if regularly replacing a patient's red blood cells slows disease progression and improves exercise capacity.
