Can a new nerve block ease shoulder pain without affecting breathing?
NCT ID NCT07739303
First seen Jul 31, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares two ways to numb the shoulder for surgery: the standard interscalene block and a combination of two other nerve blocks. The goal is to see if the combination provides similar pain relief while better preserving diaphragm function, which is important for breathing. Adults aged 18-65 having arthroscopic shoulder surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the two blocks, and their pain and breathing will be measured after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Two nerve block procedures: an interscalene block or a combination of anterior suprascapular and axillary nerve blocks, both using bupivacaine.
- What this could lead to
- If the combined nerve block works as well as the standard one, it could offer a safer way to manage shoulder surgery pain with less impact on breathing.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, so results may not apply to everyone. The combined block might not provide pain relief as effective as the standard approach.
