Could a single day of head-down rest replace a full week after eye surgery?
NCT ID NCT03714503
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether people who have surgery for a detached retina need to keep their head in a specific position for seven days, or if just one day is enough. About 20 adults with a certain type of retinal detachment will be asked to stay prone for only one day after their operation. The goal is to see if the retina stays attached just as well, which could make recovery much easier for patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- pars plana vitrectomy with C3F8 gas tamponade
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could shorten the uncomfortable head-down recovery period from a week to just one day after surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small early-phase study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is a risk that one day of positioning is not enough to keep the retina attached.
