Can a One-Minute step test help heart patients get better exercise plans?
NCT ID NCT03491423
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a short, fast step-climbing exercise in 44 people with coronary artery disease to see if it is safe and useful for measuring anaerobic fitness. Participants stepped up and down a 17.5 cm step for one minute while heart rate and pain were monitored. The goal is to develop a simple test that doctors can use to design better exercise programs for heart patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this test could give doctors a simple, safe way to measure anaerobic fitness in heart patients, helping tailor exercise programs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early feasibility study with only 44 participants. The test may not be safe or valid for all heart patients, and results may not apply broadly.
