Breathing test without the tube: ultrasound may replace needle probes

NCT ID NCT07371754

First seen Jan 31, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study explores whether a special ultrasound (shear wave elastography) can measure breathing effort by checking stiffness in chest muscles. Currently, doctors use a tube placed in the esophagus, which is uncomfortable. Researchers will test 20 people (some with COPD, some healthy) to see if the ultrasound matches the tube's results. If successful, it could lead to a simpler, painless way to monitor breathing problems.
