Sex and diabetes: new study tracks blood sugar risks during intimacy
NCT ID NCT07286500
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether sexual activity raises the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who use insulin and continuous glucose monitors. Researchers will track 100 participants for 3 months, comparing glucose levels on days with and without sexual activity. The goal is to understand real-world risks and help reduce fear around intimacy.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could provide data to help doctors give better advice about safe sexual activity for people with diabetes on insulin.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. It only looks at patterns, so it cannot prove cause and effect or change care directly.
