New anesthesia combo may calm kids after surgery

NCT ID NCT06624592

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving sevoflurane plus dexmedetomidine reduces emergence delirium (confusion and agitation) in children aged 2-7 after surgery, compared to isoflurane alone. About 400 children having ear, eye, or urology procedures will take part. The main goal is to see how many children have delirium and how long they stay in recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

sevoflurane and dexmedetomidine (drug combination) vs isoflurane (drug)

What this could lead to

If this works, it could point to a better anesthesia method that reduces confusion and distress in young children after surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial with 400 children, so results may not apply to all hospitals or surgeries. The drugs are already in use, so the main risk is that the combination may not reduce delirium as hoped.
