Can patients scan their own eyes at home? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07584798

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether people with eye diseases can take their own retinal scans using a portable OCT device without help from a technician. One hundred adults will try the self-operated device and then have a standard technician scan for comparison. The goal is to see if home-based scanning could make monitoring easier and more accessible.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Self-administered OCT imaging system

What this could lead to

If successful, this could allow patients to monitor eye conditions from home, reducing the need for frequent clinic visits.

What could go wrong

This is an early feasibility study with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The device may be difficult for some to use or produce lower-quality images.
