Hidden cancer hunt: Full-Body scan could spot tumors in blood clot patients

NCT ID NCT04304651

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether a detailed full-body scan called FDG PET/CT can find hidden cancers in people aged 50 and older who have had an unexplained blood clot. About 1,276 participants will get either the scan or standard cancer checks. The goal is to see if the scan catches more cancers early, which could lead to better treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
FDG PET/CT scan
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that advanced imaging like FDG PET/CT is better at catching hidden cancers early in people with unexplained blood clots, potentially improving survival.
What could go wrong
This is a diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The scan may miss some cancers or lead to unnecessary follow-ups. Results may not apply to younger patients or those with provoked clots.
