Ultrasound could predict ventilator weaning failure

NCT ID NCT07343882

First seen Jan 17, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a special ultrasound test, called VExUS, can predict which ICU patients will have trouble breathing on their own when doctors try to remove their breathing tube. About 350 adults who have been on a ventilator for more than 48 hours will be checked with ultrasound before a breathing trial. The goal is to see if fluid buildup in the body, detected by ultrasound, can forecast failure, helping doctors make better decisions and improve patient outcomes.
