New blood oxygen test could cut unnecessary transfusions in ICU patients

NCT ID NCT07509203

First seen Apr 04, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests whether measuring oxygen levels in the blood (ScvO2) can help doctors decide when to give red blood cell transfusions to critically ill patients with anemia. About 600 ICU patients will be randomly assigned to receive transfusions based on this oxygen measurement or based on the doctor's usual judgment. The goal is to reduce the number of transfusions and prevent complications from too many transfusions.
